He devised a casual outdoor living room, full of bold plantings and roomy places to gather, and he made the land’s geography work to his advantage.”
Through a site-specific approach, I craft landscapes that embody a distinct character, articulating the relationships between the natural environment, architecture, and the lives lived within them. This pursuit is always toward a feeling, rather than a style. Every space earns its form from a balance of decisive structure and the loose hand of nature. The result is enduring, dynamic gardens where a charged atmosphere threads the needle between serene and dramatic.
California runs through my point of view, drawing from the crosscurrent of cultural and historical influences. I felt a visceral connection to gardens early on, visiting Ganna Walska’s Lotusland in Montecito. That instinct for the theatrical is balanced by my love of early California Modernist landscape architecture, from which I take my design principles: unity, function, simplicity, scale. The tension of the two sensibilities sits somewhere between spectacle and restraint, composed to pull you into a state of restful indulgence.
